Ellandi granted consent for leisure conversion in Burton on Trent

Ellandi has been granted planning permission to convert the entire first floor of the Octagon shopping centre, Burton on Trent into a gym. The permission is for a change of use from A1 to flexible A1/D2 use at the first floor to house a 30,000-sq ft gym and pre-letting negotiations are well advanced.

Prior to Ellandi’s involvement, a similar application was refused and a second application, which was submitted in January, received a recommendation for refusal and was subsequently withdrawn. Ellandi became asset manager of the scheme in February and submitted a fresh application in April, citing case studies from its Middleton shopping centre which saw a 15 per cent increase in footfall and two units occupied as a result of a new to Exercise4Less of a similar size.

Asset manager Ruth Duffield said “Working with our planning consultants Williams Gallagher, our track record and experience was a fundamental part of this success. This allowed us to demonstrate the positive impact a gym can have, starting a new chapter for the Octagon shopping centre.”
