New £20m retail park goes ahead after legal challenge dropped

A legal challenge to plans for a new £20m retail park in Westfield, Cumbernauld has been dropped after developers L&S Broadwood reached an agreement with the owners of Cumbernauld Town Centre and the Antonine Centre.

The two town centre operators had objected to North Lanarkshire Council’s decision to grant planning permission for the retail park beside Clyde FC’s Broadwood Stadium, leaving the development in legal limbo for the last six months.

The settlement means that L&S Broadwood can now press ahead with the seven-unit scheme at Westfield plans where M&S Simply Food, Aldi and Home Bargains have already signed pre-lettings. It will also feature a drive-thru coffee shop, a petrol station and parking for 600 cars.

Bryan Wilson, development director at L&S Broadwood, said: “We hope to have Westfield up and running by mid-to-late summer next year. We are confident of bringing more top brands to Cumbernauld, hopefully making people feel it has been well worth the wait.”
