The Glass Works in Barnsley starts on site with £5.3m library building

The council-led regeneration of Barnsley town centre has begun with the start on site of the town’s new library building. The start follows the council’s decision to commit an additional £70m to the scheme, bringing its total investment to £120m.

The Glass Works is located on a 3.8-ha site around Cheapside and will provide 590,000 sq ft of family-led day and night time retail and leisure uses. This includes a new home for Barnsley Markets, a new central library and community space, multi-storey car park and high-quality public realm. Queensberry is acting as development manager, alongside Turner and Townsend.

While construction is ongoing on the first phase of The Glass Works, Queensberry and Turner and Townsend will shortly submit a planning application for Phase 2. The final scheme is scheduled for completion in May 2020.

Cineworld and Superbowl UK have signed to anchor the mixed-use open-air centre. Cineworld has agreed a 20-year lease for a 13-screen multiplex cinema and Superbowl UK has taken 18,000 sq ft, also on a 20-year lease. In addition to bowling, Superbowl UK will bring its Laser Quest and Crazy Club soft play offer.

Stuart Harris, commercial director and co-founder of Queensberry, said: “The region has been in need of this kind of regeneration for some time, so it is great to see progress being made and the first stage of construction take place. Barnsley Council is a great example of an innovative and forward thinking local authority that is taking a proactive approach to its future economic success by committing to fund such a significant project like The Glass Works. We have already received an impressive level of interest from occupiers, and are looking forward to announcing further brands in the coming months as construction for the first phase continues.”
