LXBs Sutton regeneration scheme reaches key landmark
Works have completed on a new 132,000-sq ft superstore for Sainsburys which anchors LXB Retail Properties £50 million retail and residential redevelopment on the old gas works site on Crown Road, Sutton.
Designed by The Harris Partnership, the new store forms a new northern gateway to the town centre. It features a two-storey glass atrium main entrance which also serves as the key focus of a large, new public square in the south-eastern corner of the site designed by Vector Design Concepts with water features including reflective pool and water wall with shops and restaurants lining the square.
The wider Sutton High Street streetscape has been significantly enhanced with new active frontages and hard and soft landscape elements creating a high quality public realm for day and night users. And major road improvements to the junction of Crown Road and High Street have unlocked the site, improved traffic flow in the area and provided access to Sainsbury's 350-space car park.
Planning was secured by The Harris Partnership for the six-acre site in 2014, and in addition to the superstore the project includes associated residential and commercial development including 181 apartments and five townhouses.
