First visit for 35 years brings 700 shopping centre professionals to the UK
The ICSC’s European conference celebrated its 40th edition with a busy first day at the Park Plaza hotel in London. More than 700 shopping centre professionals gathered in London, marking the conference’s return to the UK after a 35-year absence.
Welcoming the visitors in his capacity as BCSC president, Hammerson CEO David Atkins said: “London is arguably the number one retail destination in in the world - more retailers make their first international steps here than anywhere else.”
And he added: The UK and London are at forefront of innovation – the UK consumer has embraced online retail wholeheartedly and retailers here have responded. Multichannel and catering all now play a part in creating a successful retail destination.”
Cushman & Wakefield retail partner Yvonne Court led a session on Destination Retail. “Shoppers still want to visit stores,” she asserted. “It's where they like to make the final purchase decision.
But she said digital had become a real game changer. “Retailers needs for stores are changing, stores may close and size requirements may change,” she said.
“There is a need for much more active asset management: shopping centre need to get way beyond the basics,” she concluded.
