Uniqlo back on growth track

Japanese casual clothing retailer Uniqlo is back on the expansion trail, two years after slashing its UK portfolio.

Harper Dennis Hobbs is seeking stores throughout the UK, with initial emphasis on locations inside the M25.

Uniqlo, which has six stores in the London area, is looking to open five or six units of 5,000 to 6,000 sq ft a year.

It is targeting Bluewater, Lakeside, Bromley and Kensington High Street, as well as high-street sites in towns like Reading, Oxford and Southampton.

“Our client is trading well after launching in the UK, and is looking to develop its portfolio across the UK with an initial focus on London and the south-east,” said Harper Dennis Hobbs’ James Ebel.

“We already have a unit under offer and are now seeking up to 10 new sites for 2005/2006.”

Uniqlo launched in the UK in 2001 and soon had 21 stores, but was hit by severe conditions in the Japanese economy and cut its estate.
