ServiceMaster Clean is undertaking a highly specialised cleaning role at Westfield Derby
Nationwide specialist cleaning ServiceMaster Clean understands the importance of first impressions and works closely with its customers to maintain premises including one of the largest shopping centres in the Midlands.
Westfield Derby opened in 2007 with brand new flooring and furnishings throughout, all designed with aesthetics in mind, to create a luxurious surrounding for shoppers.
A key part of the interior design was a series of handmade Chinese rugs which were made specifically for the £340m redevelopment and designed to reflect the Derbyshire landscape. But with over 25 million visitors a year it became apparent that there was a need for regular maintenance of the rugs to prevent colour loss and staining. After identifying the need for a specialist service provider Westfield called in ServiceMaster Clean.
Local ServiceMaster Clean business owner Dermot Boyle initially visited the site in 2007 to assess the condition of the rugs. Following this ServiceMaster Clean developed a cleaning programme to ensure that the rugs were restored and would be maintained as such.
Boyle explains: “We offer Westfield an out of hours cleaning solution to minimise the disruption to shoppers and staff. We work through the night twice a year to clean each rug. The rugs are very heavy and large; five metres by three metres and it takes four people to lift and move just one. We begin by pre-spraying each rug with shampoo, leaving for five minutes. We then carry out an extraction clean of the whole rug using our specialist machinery. We carry out additional spot cleaning where necessary to treat individual stains.”
“The final stage is to apply our own unique product which is a protective, soil resistant and anti-bacterial finish to each rug. Our finish also includes a product called Hygienilac, which leaves all the rugs with up to 12 months protection against dirt and bacteria. It’s amazing how much grime rugs can collect and it takes around 45 minutes to clean each one, but once cleaned they look fantastic.”
Malcolm Chapman, building services manager at Westfield Derby says: “After opening the Westfield Derby we required the service of a specialist company to look after all of the mall and food court carpets. The service that ServiceMaster provides has conformed to our standards of acceptance with sensible costs being charged. The service staff and management have always been obliging, working to the time restrictions that a shopping centre facilities team has to accommodate.”
